After a long day of moving, the last thing you want to do is search through 50 boxes for a shower curtain. Instead of going through the hassle of rummaging through boxes, be proactive and pack a first night kit instead. This first night kit should be packed and kept separately from the rest of your items during the move so that you’ll have easy access to it at the end of the day.
What to pack inside the first night kit will be different for every family, but there are some basics items that you should keep in mind. Keep reading for tips on what to pack in your first night kit.
Clothing
Try to pack at least a day's (or two days') worth of clothing for multiple reasons. First, after a long day of moving you won't want to rifle through boxes to get to your clothes for work the next day. Secondly, if you're moving long distance, it may take a few days to receive your items from the removal company, so having a few days' worth of clothing is helpful to pack in your first night kit.
Cleaning supplies
One of the first things to do in your new home is clean it to your liking. The entire home doesn't need to be spotless, but it would be lovely if the shower was, so be sure to pack bathroom cleaning supplies so you can at the very least take a shower at the end of the day. Don't forget paper towels and cleaning wipes--such as antibacterial surface wipes for cleaning counter tops and wipes to clean your hands if hand soap isn't nearby.
Toiletries
For the same reason you should pack a change of clothing, you should also pack some toiletries in your first night box. Again, depending on when you expect to receive your items from the moving company, you may need enough to last you for multiple days so plan accordingly. Along with the toiletries, you should also keep a shower curtain, towels and toilet paper.
Electronics
Luckily you planned ahead and your electricity is already set up in your new home, so you'll be able to charge your cell phones. Many people already have extra charging cords for when they travel, so just make sure that you have one stowed away in your first night kit as well.
Entertainment
This might seem like a luxury in a new home, but if you have electricity but no TV or Internet service, bringing along something to watch can help you relax after a long day of moving. If you're moving with children, this will also help them calm down after a busy day.
Blankets and air mattress
Again, depending on when your belongings are expected to arrive, you may not have a comfortable place to sleep on your first night. Packing a pillow, blanket and air mattress could go a long way toward getting a good night's sleep after a long moving day--so don't forget to pack them!
